Upon return from the military service I joined the Catholic University and began consulting on economic and financial matters for the Confederation of Portuguese Industry (CIP), then headed by António Vasco de Mello. I retained this position under Pedro Ferraz da Costa until I left for the European Commission in Brussels in December 1988.
In the Spring of 1999, I helped Pedro Ferraz da Costa organize the celebration of CIP's 25th anniversary and participated in the sessions in Lisbon and Porto.
